How To Get An Australian Student Visa

Getting an Australian Student Visa can be a long and arduous process. This is because you need to go through a couple of stages before you are able to do so. A student visa can be applied for at the Australian embassy in your country of residence.

Before you can apply for a student visa, you must first have an offer of admission from an Australian Institution. You can check this by contacting the institution directly or going to their website and looking for information on how to apply for a student visa. It may be that the institution has its own procedure which must be followed before they can issue an offer of admission.

Types of Australian Visas

There are two types of Australian student visas: the Subclass 500 and the Subclass 573.

A student who is accepted into a graduate course or will be studying a course which is an English-intensive program, for example, a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication – Journalism, will be required to apply for a student visa under the subclass 573.

A student who is accepted into an undergraduate course or a vocational course that requires a lower level of English language proficiency such as a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Studies or Legal Studies will be required to apply for a student visa under the subclass 500. Each of these visas has its eligibility requirements but the major requirements are listed below.

Australian Student Visa Requirements

Admission into an Institution: You should have been accepted by a university, college, or institute of higher education in Australia. You must also have an offer from that institution before you will be issued a student visa.

English language proficiency: You must be able to demonstrate that you have IELTS, PTE Academic, or TOEFL scores. This will be required to prove that you have English language competencies required for international students to participate in the learning and social activities.

Steps to Get an Australian Student Visa

Step 1: Once you have made contact with a potential host institution, it will decide if you are eligible to study with them. If you are, they will send you an offer of admission which they will also include in your visa application.

Step 2: Some institutions may require you to complete a questionnaire as part of your application. This is to give the institution an idea of what sort of person you are and it is not intended to be a test. It should take you no longer than 15 minutes to complete.

Step 3: Check with the Australian Embassy in your country and request a student visa application form. You can also fill the application form online using: http://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/Trav/Visa/Immi

Step 4: Once you have filled in the application form and submitted it to the Australian Embassy, you will wait a couple of weeks for your application and documents to be properly reviewed. Usually, this phase takes about 4 weeks.

In conclusion, getting an Australian Student Visa can be a long and arduous process because Australia sees an influx of students from all over the world but can also be very rewarding. Follow the guidelines mentioned above carefully to ensure you have the best chance of being granted this visa.
